Stacia from Never Ending Food with other Supporting Partners

Never Ending Food was invited to participate in the launch of the 2023 tree planting season. This was part of the Lilongwe City Council’s ‘Greening Lilongwe Initiative‘ which was launched in 2022 by the new city mayor, Richard Banda. This campaign aims to plant avenues of trees along Lilongwe’s roadways, and support the establishment of public green spaces in schools, workplaces, homes, and cemeteries.

The campaign will run for the next five years and is striving to restore up to 500 hectares of degraded land and eroded riverbanks. The Greening Lilongwe Initiative runs hand-in-hand with the strategic plan for the Lingadzi/Lilongwe Ecological Corridor System, a collaborative effort to establish an accessible, environmentally sound, sustainable, and functional corridor system along the Lingadzi and Lilongwe rivers, which run right through the heart of the city.

Today’s tree planting efforts saw the establishment of over 200 trees along Lilongwe’s new interchange, with the hopes that it will eventually be a publicly-accessed park. The festivities included a speech from the Lilongwe City Mayor, cultural dances, music, and a well-organized design for where to plant the trees.
